Statement from Washington Forest Protection Association Executive Director Jason Spadaro

The Forest Practices Board’s approval of the Type Np buffer rule is a setback for collaboration and fairness. The decision endorses a flawed process that produced only one option—ignoring the economic consequences for forest landowners and rural communities while offering no clear environmental gain.

We urge the Board to form a committee, supported by DNR staff, to develop alternative rule options that better balance environmental and economic outcomes. Each TFW caucus should be represented and aim for a consensus proposal.

Washington can do better. Sustainable forestry and healthy streams go hand in hand when decisions are grounded in science, transparency, and respect for all stakeholders.
