Regulation & Policy
WFPA provides Regulation & Policy member services and opportunities for involvement in two key areas:
Forest Management
The Forest Management program addresses issues relating to the operational aspects of owning and managing private forests, such as:
- the regulation and implementation of forest practices
- fire protection
- water quality
- wildlife
- cooperative programs
- science and technology, and
- research
This program is supported by the Forest Policy Committee -- comprised primarily of foresters and timberland managers from member companies. In addition, this committee sponsors several task groups to address specific issue areas -- Science Strategy Team, Wildlife, and Cultural Resources. Member companies with personnel experienced in these areas (e.g. scientists, biologists) are encouraged to participate in these task groups.
Environmental Policy
The Environmental Policy program represents the association in complex public policy processes and forums dealing with environmental issues that have the potential to impact forest landowners. The program also insures that the interests of forest landowners are effectively represented in legal proceedings of potential impact. This program works closely with the Forest Policy Committee (see Forest Management). Legal aspects of this program are supported by the Legal Committee - comprised of member in-house counsel and of-counsel attorneys. This committee evaluates and researches legal issues and legislation, recommends legal strategies for WFPA, and ensures that WFPA receives adequate legal representation on issues affecting forestry.
