Conservationists, timber companies and environmentalists announce their support for recently introduced federal legislation to create Community Forestry bonds. Lands purchased with the new bonds would remain in private ownership and still be logged, and also carry a permanent conservation easement under which it could not be developed.

Seattle’s Washington Policy Center announced that its 2009 Environmental Innovator Award will be presented to Bruce Lippke, Professor of Forest Economics at the University of Washington. Lippke is being recognized for his consistently thoughtful, scientific and innovative work on forest sustainability.

Stan Mueller, co-owner of the Mueller-Sack Tree Farm, was named 2009 Tree Farmer of the Year. Mueller received his award from Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark during the Washington Farm Forestry Association’s annual meeting on May 29-30, 2009.

A special work group of public, private, environmental, and forestry interests appointed by the Washington State Forest Practices Board jointly testified is supporting HB 1484 – which would create a habitat open space program to purchase land or conservation easements for federally listed threatened and endangered species such as the northern spotted owl.

In October 2008, stakeholders from a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives convened at the NW Environmental Forum to examine the challenges forestry and forest management is facing. This Forum has provided an opportunity to examine data, review the outcome of recent research and collaborate on how to maintain Washington’s forested landscape. Participants agreed on six actions that would assist in maintaining Washington forests.
