The 2007 Holiday Tree, which will be displayed on the Washington State Capitol Campus in Olympia, was donated by WFPA member, Rayonier. The lighting ceremony is December 7 at 6 pm in the rotunda of the Legislative Building. Governor Chris Gregoire will make a proclamation at the lighting ceremony. The noble fir comes from a Rayonier tree farm in Sequim, WA. The event is free and open to the public but any proceeds donated in relation to the tree will help support rural fire departments throughout the state.
WFPA’s 2007 Annual Meeting will be on Thursday, November 15 in Olympia. You won’t want to miss a panel discussion with state leaders such as Commissioner of Public Lands, Doug Sutherland, Director of Agriculture, Valoria Loveland, Attorney General Rob McKenna and Director of Community, Trade & Economic Development, Juli Wilkerson. Register by Nov. 1 for a discounted rate.

The 15th annual Salmon Homecoming celebration will take place Sept. 7-9, 2007 at Seattle’s Waterfront Park and the Seattle Aquarium. The objectives of Salmon Homecoming are to provide opportunities for tribal and non-tribal communities to come together in a positive atmosphere, learn from one another, and explore ways to support cooperative spirit in salmon restoration and protection. The celebrations include cultural presentations, Northwest traditional gatherings, Pow Wows, Cedar Canoe events, environmental fairs, educational outreach activities, salmon bakes and even salmon runs.
WFPA published an updated brochure about Washington State’s Forests & Fish Law. This four-page brochure talks about the importance of cool, clean water, how this legislation meets the requirements of both the federal Endangered Species and Clean Water Acts, and how private forest landowners are making a difference. The first annual Port Gamble Forest Festival will be held Sunday, September 9, 2007 in downtown Port Gamble. The event will highlight family activities, tours, entertainment, nature walks and an all you can eat loggers breakfast.
In order to better inform the public on the northern spotted owl draft recovery plan and to hear what the public is thinking about the plan, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has scheduled four public meetings across Washington, Oregon, and California. One meeting is in Olympia, WA on May 31 from 6:30-9:30 pm. This meeting is at St. Martin’s University in the Norman Worthington Conference Center.
At the 12th Annual Cascade Land Conservancy (CLC) breakfast in Seattle, WFPA was awarded with one of the Cascade Agenda Legislative Leadership Awards. The award was presented as Governor Chris Gregoire signed the Transfer of Development Rights Marketplace bill, House Bill 1636.
A team studying on the shores of the South Fork Skokomish River in Mason County, WA, found fish fossils reputed to be approximately one million-years-old. A team of scientists will present their findings (free of charge) on May 3, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the Shelton Civic Center in Shelton, WA. Several fish fossils were found in 2001 on Green Diamond Resource Company (then Simpson Timber) land. Green Diamond subsequently sponsored a team of scientists from the Burke Museum, University of Washington and University of Michigan to study the relics.
WFPA has filled three open positions. Adrian Miller was hired as the Associate Director of Forest Management; Farah Derosier as the Administrative Program Assistant; and Gigi Williams as the Environmental Education Administrative Assistant.
