Western Washington Animal
Nuthatch: The nuthatch is unique in that it can walk up and down tree trunks and hang upside down on branches, looking
for insects to eat. This social, non-migrating bird lives in the canopy but often forages on tree trunks in the understory.
Western Washington Animal
Vole: The
vole is a mouse-like rodent. It burrows in the ground and eats truffles (root fungi), insects and seeds on the
forest floor. It has many predators including the owl and weasel. The red tree vole is unique because it nests in the branches
of Douglas fir trees and rarely leaves the canopy.
